Fire
Prehistory · California History–Social Science 6.1
Learning to control fire was one of the biggest steps in human history. Early humans first used fire from natural sources, like lightning strikes. Later they learned to keep fires going and to start their own, probably by striking stones to make sparks or rubbing sticks together. People were using fire hundreds of thousands of years ago. Fire kept them warm, gave them light at night and scared away dangerous animals. Most importantly, fire let people cook. Cooked food is easier to chew and digest, and cooking kills many germs. With fire, people could live in colder places and stay up after dark. Groups gathered around the fire to eat, work and talk, which may have helped bring them closer together.
