Hatshepsut
Ancient Egypt · California History–Social Science 6.2
Hatshepsut was one of the few women to rule ancient Egypt as pharaoh. She ruled for about 20 years, from about 1479 to 1458 BCE. Unlike many pharaohs, she focused on trade and building instead of war. Her most famous trade voyage went to a land the Egyptians called Punt, somewhere to the south along the Red Sea coast. The ships came back with gold, ebony wood, animal skins and living incense trees. Hatshepsut also built a beautiful temple at Deir el-Bahari, near the city of Thebes. Pictures carved on its walls tell the story of the voyage to Punt. In many statues she is shown with a pharaoh's false beard and royal clothes, the way a king was usually shown. Years after her death, many of her images were removed. Historians still debate why.
